Urinary Tract Infections (Recurrent UTIs)

Urinary tract infections (UTIs) cause burning, urgency, frequency, and discomfort; while most UTIs are isolated and respond quickly to treatment, recurrent UTIs (multiple infections over a defined period) require targeted evaluation. Recurrent infections can interfere with everyday life and may signal an underlying issue that benefits from specialist care.

Causes & Risk Factors:

Risk factors include sexual activity, postmenopausal estrogen decline, certain anatomic variations, prior pelvic surgery, incomplete bladder emptying, and factors that alter normal vaginal flora. Medical conditions such as diabetes can also increase susceptibility.

Treatment Options:

At Anna Pelvic Health Center, care begins with culture-directed treatment of active infections. For recurrent cases, Dr. Hamade evaluates for underlying contributors through history, urine testing, and selective imaging or cystoscopy when indicated. Preventive strategies include behavioral modifications, topical vaginal estrogen for postmenopausal patients, targeted prophylactic or post-coital antibiotics when appropriate, and addressing any anatomic or functional causes.

What to Expect:

Your visit will include a focused review of infection history and possible triggers. Many patients experience a significant reduction in recurrence after targeted evaluation and the implementation of a prevention plan. More complex cases are managed in coordination with urology when necessary.
