Biography

Dr. Bao was born in Honolulu, Hawaii, and lived there during his early childhood before moving to Shanghai, China. He later returned to the States for college at Penn State University and obtained a degree in Pre-Medicine. Between his undergraduate and medical education, he worked as a behavioral tech at a drug and alcohol rehab facility. He later studied at EVMS for medical school and completed his psychiatry residency training at UVA. While training at his residency, he places a large emphasis on patients’ autonomy and prefers to view each patient-doctor’s relationship as a partnership. Whether it is depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, PTSD, or ADHD, there is no single way to approach treatment. However, to Dr. Bao, the best approach is always to craft a treatment plan that best aligns with his patient’s goals and values without compromising safety. Whether it is his emphasis on patient autonomy or his laid back energy, people often find him very easy to work with given his warm and non-judgmental attitude.
