Where should I go?

Whenever an illness or injury occurs, you need to decide how serious it is, and how soon to get medical care. It is best to attempt to contact your Primary Care Provider (PCP) first.

Your PCP knows your complete medical history and may be able to handle non-life-threatening illnesses or injuries, offer you a same or next day appointment, or refer you to another Privia Medical Group provider.

As your partner in care, keep your PCP informed if an unexpected illness or injury occurs.

When to go to Urgent Care

If your PCP cannot offer you an appointment within 48 hours, most urgent care centers are equipped to handle non-life threatening situations that you can typically find treatment for at your doctor's office, such as:

  • Sprains and strains
  • Fevers
  • Vomiting, diarrhea, stomach pain
  • Minor injuries and burns
  • Upper respiratory infections

When to go to the Emergency Department (ED)

The Emergency Department (ED) is meant for true emergencies. In an emergency, call 911 or go to an ED near you.

Emergency Departments should handle serious medical conditions, trauma, and life-threatening situations. Here are some conditions to seek care at the ED:

  • Chest pain
  • Stroke
  • Unconsciousness
  • Life-Threatening injury or illness
