Initial Enrollment Period

When you turn 65, you can sign up for Medicare during the 7-month period that:

  • Begins three months before the month you turn 65;
  • Includes the month you turn 65; and
  • Ends three months after the month you turn 65.

During this time, you may enroll in Original Medicare or a Medicare Advantage (Part C) plan. Failing to sign up for Medicare during your Initial Enrollment Period may mean late-enrollment penalties.

Special Enrollment Period

You may qualify to enroll in a Medicare Advantage plan or make changes to your existing Medicare Advantage or prescription drug coverage during Medicare’s Special Enrollment Period when certain events happen in your life such as moving or losing your current insurance coverage. Each scenario has specific rules about when you can make changes and the type of changes you can make.
