Many conditions and ailments can lead to knee pain. Sports injuries can cause pain in your knee, as can arthritis and gout. You may even have a ruptured ligament or torn cartilage that’s causing your pain, or possibly an infection.

Knee pain rarely happens on its own, and you most likely have other symptoms. You may experience swelling or stiffness in your knee. The joint may appear red or be warm to the touch.

Your knee may become weak or unstable. You may struggle with mobility and be unable to straighten your knee. It may make popping or crunching noises when you move.

If, after three to five days of RICE, your knee isn’t better, your doctor may suggest physical therapy and wearing a knee brace. They may inject a numbing agent or corticosteroid into your knee to reduce your pain.
