What do I do with my Sharps?

Although those little red bins are nice for disposing sharps (ie: needles and lancets), the truth is that you don't need anything fancy or official to do this job. But, you do need to do it safely!

Here's a simple way to dispose of your sharps:

1) Put used sharps in a strong plastic container
(like an old detergent jug or something similar with a screw-cap)

2) When the container is about 3/4 full, screw the cap on, and reinforce the cap seal with duct-tape

3) Write "sharps/do not recycle" on the bottle (ie: with a Sharpie marker)

4) Put the plastic container in the household trash (not a recycle bin) or bring to a local disposal center

That's it!

Remember:

  • Sharps should never be thrown loosely into the trash or toilet.
  • Do not use milk jugs, soda cans/bottles or water bottles to store sharps.
  • Even sharps that retract after use, or are very small, should still be disposed of like all other sharps.
