Proudly Part of Privia Health
At The Orthopedic Center, we’re proud to offer personalized care with a strong emphasis on continuity, ensuring patients see the same trusted doctors from diagnosis through recovery. Virginia “Gay” Moore is a shining example of how this approach leads to lasting results. Over the course of 15 years, she was treated by Dr. Jeffrey O’Brien and Dr. Gonzalo Valdivia for multiple orthopedic issues, including rotator cuff damage, hip arthritis, and severe joint pain in her knees and shoulders.
By remaining with the same experienced team, Virginia received seamless, coordinated care that led to the successful replacement of both hips, both knees, and both shoulders, all with smooth recoveries and minimal pain. Her story is a testament to the power of long-term relationships in healthcare and how a consistent, compassionate team can help patients regain independence and live pain-free
A Journey Through Multiple Joint Replacements
Can you please tell us your name and what brought you to The Orthopedic Center?
My name is Virginia “Gay” Moore. I first came to The Orthopedic Center after suffering a rotator cuff tear. My doctor referred me to Dr. O’Brien in Merritt Island. I spent three months in physical therapy with Steve leading up to surgery, and another three months afterward. A few years later, I started having issues with my hip. I returned to Dr. O’Brien, who referred me to Dr. Valdivia at the Palm Bay office. I had my right hip replaced in October 2009, and my left hip in December of the same year. Everything was great for a while, but eventually I began experiencing problems with my knees. I went back to Dr. Valdivia and began receiving injections in both my knees and shoulders. Eventually, I decided to have all four joints replaced, both knees and both shoulders, all within one year.
I had my right shoulder done in March 2024, my left knee in July, my left shoulder in September, and my right knee in December. Every surgery was a success, and my recovery was smooth and relatively pain-free. Now in 2025, Steve and I are focusing on improving my balance and strength.
Identifying the Signs and Seeking Help
What symptoms ultimately led you to seek treatment?
My knees made grinding noises and would lock up. I walked stifflegged for about a year just to avoid bending them. As for my shoulders, I started losing mobility, especially when reaching overhead, and then the pain really kicked in. That was the signal it was time to take action.
Living with Chronic Pain.
How was your daily life affected before your surgeries?
Everything was painful. I eventually had to use a wheelchair and stopped trying to walk altogether. I wasn’t able to drive for a long time either. It was very limiting.
Choosing The Orthopedic Center
What influenced your decision to choose The Orthopedic Center?
My primary care doctor, who I've been with for many years, recommended them. After that, everything went so well that I just kept coming back. I’ve had no hip pain in over 15 years since Dr. Valdivia did my first surgery, so I knew I was in good hands.
A Team That Stands Out
Was there anything in particular that stood out to you about our team?
Everyone at The Orthopedic Center is incredibly organized and helpful. They take care of just about everything for you, and the way they work together makes the entire process seamless.
Support Every Step of the Way
What was the surgical experience like for you? Did you feel supported?
Absolutely. They walk you through everything, even using models so you know what to expect. Everyone knows their role and how to help one another so that you’re never left feeling unsure or alone.
Smooth Recoveries and Major Milestones
How was your recovery? Any milestones that stand out?
One of the biggest moments was leaving rehab confident in my ability to care for myself again. That was huge. Plus, I didn’t experience much pain, just a little muscle soreness. I didn’t even need pain meds.
A Renewed Sense of Freedom
How has your quality of life changed since your surgeries?
I can move again and I’m pain-free. I’m flexible, confident, and so grateful for how everything turned out
Encouragement for Future Patients
What advice would you give to others considering surgery or facing a similar recovery?
Work with your doctor and really understand your symptoms. Don’t be afraid to explore your options, because there's rarely just one. Most importantly: don’t wait. The technology is incredible today, and Dr. Valdivia is simply amazing.
