Personal Interests
Dr. Kara enjoys spending time outdoors with her husband, John, and two daughters, Anna and Charlotte. They enjoy boating, swimming, skiing, hiking and traveling together. Kara also enjoys reading, gardening, and playing tennis. She coaches her daughters' soccer teams, is a member of Our Lady of Nazareth Catholic Church health ministry and a member of the College of Arts and Sciences Advisory Board at the University of Mary Washington.
Biography
Dr. Kara Matala, a board certified family practice physician, joined Roanoke Partners in Health in 2012. She is a member of the American Academy of Family Physicians and the Virginia Academy of Family Physicians. From 2001-2011, she was a managing partner of Bedford Medical, a family practice office in Bedford, VA. Kara finished her family practice residency in 2001 at Carilion Health System, an affiliate of the University of Virginia in Roanoke, VA.
She completed a traditional osteopathic rotating internship in 1999 at Delaware County Memorial Hospital in Drexel Hill, PA and Crozer-Chester Medical Center, a Level 1 Trauma Center in Chester, PA. Kara received her Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree from the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine in 1998, where she received the Daniel Kij Medical Book Award. She is a 1994 Phi Beta Kappa, Summa Cum Laude graduate of the University of Mary Washington in Fredericksburg, VA, where she serves on the College of Arts and Sciences Advisory Board.
