PCOS
What is PCOS?
Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a hormonal disorder common among women of reproductive age. It affects the ovaries and can cause irregular menstrual cycles, excess androgen levels, and cysts on the ovaries. PCOS may also be associated with metabolic and cardiovascular complications.
Causes of PCOS
The exact cause of PCOS is unknown, but factors such as genetics, insulin resistance, and hormonal imbalances play a role in its development. Women with PCOS often have higher levels of androgens (male hormones) and insulin in their bodies, leading to symptoms such as irregular periods and acne.
Symptoms of PCOS
- Irregular menstrual cycles or absence of periods
- Excess hair growth on the face, chest, or back (hirsutism)
- Acne and oily skin
- Weight gain or difficulty losing weight
- Hair thinning or baldness
- Darkening of the skin, especially in the neck creases, groin, and under breasts (acanthosis nigricans)
Treatment for PCOS
Treatment for PCOS aims to manage symptoms and reduce the risk of complications. Options may include:
- Lifestyle changes: Diet and exercise to manage weight and improve insulin sensitivity.
- Medications: Birth control pills to regulate menstrual cycles and reduce androgen levels. Other medications may be prescribed to address specific symptoms such as acne or hair growth.
- Fertility treatments: For women trying to conceive, medications such as clomiphene or letrozole may stimulate ovulation.
- Management of other health concerns: Treatment for associated conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, or high cholesterol.
