Respiratory allergies can significantly disrupt your daily life, making it difficult to perform everyday tasks and enjoy your favorite activities. This makes knowing how to manage your allergies essential for maintaining your quality of life. Understanding Respiratory Allergies
Respiratory allergies occur when your immune system overreacts to airborne substances such as pollen, mold, dust mites, and animal dander. These allergens can trigger a range of symptoms, including sneezing, coughing, wheezing, and shortness of breath. Understanding the triggers and symptoms of respiratory allergies is the first step in managing them effectively.
Diagnostic Testing
Accurate diagnosis is key to allergy management. At Hill Family Medicine, we use advanced diagnostic tests, including blood tests and skin prick tests, to identify the specific allergens affecting you. These tests help us determine the best allergy treatment options for you.
Immunotherapy for Long-Term Relief
For patients with severe or persistent respiratory allergies, immunotherapy can provide long-term relief. This treatment involves sublingual drops containing small amounts of the allergen. Over time, your body builds up a tolerance, reducing the severity of your allergic reactions.
Immunotherapy (aka Allergy) injections have been the standard in this country for quite some time. Treatment with sublingual drops, while more popular in Europe, is equally as effective as injections but comes with a much reduced risk of an airway emergency, a potentially deadly condition called anaphylaxis. The drops can also be done easily in your own home, avoiding the time and expense of traveling to the clinic, receiving the immunotherapy injection every week, and then waiting under observation in the clinic after every injection to make sure anaphylaxis does not occur.
Lifestyle & Environmental Modifications
Simple changes, such as using air purifiers, keeping windows closed during high pollen seasons, and regularly cleaning your home to remove dust and pet dander, can make a big difference. Our team at Hill Family Medicine provides practical advice and support to help you create an allergy-friendly environment at home and work.
