Community Health Alert: Measles Exposure in the DMV Area (May 2026)

We want to inform our patients and community members that *recent, potential measles exposures have been identified across the DMV (DC, Maryland, Virginia)*. These exposures are linked to a confirmed case involving a DC resident and a traveler who passed through *Dulles International Airport* and the regional transit system.

Exposure Details:

  • Locations: Dulles International Airport (Concourse B and baggage claim) and multiple WMATA Metrorail lines
  • Timeframe: April 23 – April 27, 2026
  • Regional Context: Virginia has reported 21 measles cases—higher than the typical 1–2 cases annually

At this time, this situation does not meet the definition of an outbreak.

An outbreak is defined as an increase in cases of a disease above what is normally expected in a specific area over a given period. Current reports indicate limited, traceable exposures rather than sustained community-wide spread.

What you should know:

  • Routine early vaccination is not recommended for the general public at this time. Please continue to follow the standard immunization schedule.
  • If you believe you or your child may have been exposed, contact our office promptly. In some cases, post-exposure vaccination or preventive treatment may be recommended.
  • Monitor for symptoms* of measles, which may appear 7–21 days after exposure, including:
  • Fever
  • Cough
  • Runny nose
  • Red eyes
  • Rash

Important: Measles is highly contagious and can remain in the air for up to two hours after an infected person leaves an area.

We are closely monitoring this situation and will provide updates as needed. Protecting your family’s health is our priority.

If you have questions or concerns, please contact our office.
