PRP stands for Platelet Rich Plasma. PRP is one of the most exciting newer developments in orthopedics. PRP is a technique in which blood is extracted from a vein (like a blood test), then spun down in a centrifuge to extract the plasma layer. This plasma layer is a form of stem cell technology that is rich with your own platelets and growth factors, which are very useful in the world of foot and ankle to promote your body’s natural healing process to occur and help damaged tissues regenerate. This plasma is then injected into the affected area.
PRP can eliminate the need for steroids or surgery. PRP harnesses your own body’s normal healing properties to stimulate and accelerate our healing response to any injury. It is available in our office for healing of damaged tendons, ligaments, cartilage and joints.
Once you arrive, check in at reception. The nurse will come get you and perform a simple blood draw from your arm. This blood is then spun down in the centrifuge to separate the plasma. While this is spinning if indicated the doctor will anesthetize the area with a local anesthetic. Once ready, the doctor will inject the affected area. The use of ultrasound to visualize the area and direct the injection is often utilized. This entire procedure will take 30-45 minutes depending on the area being injected.
Unless specifically indicated, you can drive post injection. Often you may be placed in an offloading boot/shoe/brace to protect and immobilize the structures being injected.
Because PRP is merely components of your own blood that have been separated out, there is nothing artificial or extraneous added to it. As such, it may represent one of the safest treatment modalities we can offer a patient. It is also FDA approved and accepted by all major professional sports as well as the International Olympic Committee.
