Bunions are progressive bone deformities of the foot. They occur when the long bone of your foot (the first metatarsal) shifts out of its normal position, causing the big toe to lean and form a protruding bump on the side of the foot. This misalignement can result in chronic inflammation, irritation, and pain.
Treatment for bunions depends on the severity of the bunion and your symptoms. Early on, conservative options like shoe modifications, padding, and orthotics may help relieve discomfort. However, when pain persists or the deformity progresses, surgical correction may be recommended to restore proper alignment and function.
Surgical correction of a bunion, often referred to as a bunionectomy, addresses the underlying misalignment. Some procedures focus on correcting the problem at the base of the first metatarsal for more advanced deformities, while others reshape or remove the prominent bump itself in milder cases.
