What to Expect During a Same-Day Well Women's Health Exam

Scheduled for your first gynecological visit? Take a deep breath, and rest assured that it's a routine process and there's nothing to feel embarrassed about.

Keep reading to learn what you can expect during a same-day well women's health exam.

How Is This Exam Different From Any Other Check-up?

While your overall health is considered, a same-day well women's health exam prioritizes the health of your vagina, cervix, uterus, and breasts. Additionally, the appointment provides you with the opportunity to share your concerns and ask questions in a safe environment.

Here Is What You Can Expect During a Same-Day Well Women's Health Exam

Some aspects do not differ from a routine appointment such as weight, blood pressure, and temperature checks. Your provider may wish to discuss your medical history. Beyond that, expect the following:

  • Pelvic exam: Your provider will wear gloves and lubricate them before inserting two fingers into your vaginal canal for a brief examination. They will apply pressure to your abdomen to check for abnormal lumps or discomfort. Don't hesitate to communicate any pain or tenderness you experience.
  • Pap smear: A lubricated speculum is inserted to view your vulva, vagina, and cervix. A swab is used to swipe your cervix, and the sample will be sent to a lab to screen for cervical cancer.
  • Breast exam: Your doctor will gently massage each breast in circular motions, checking for lumps or cysts. Early detection of breast cancer is crucial, so any abnormal findings will prompt further evaluation such as a diagnostic mammogram to confirm diagnosis.
  • Exam review: After your exam, your provider discusses findings and any identified issues or concerns. You should be allowed to ask questions to clarify information. You might be asked to schedule a follow-up appointment.
