A hysteroscopy is a procedure that enables us to directly view and examine the inside of the uterus using a hysteroscope, a thin device with a camera attached to a video system. The hysteroscope is roughly the size of a pencil. This procedure is typically performed in our office, offering a convenient and cost-effective way to diagnose uterine issues. It is a vital tool in reproductive health, assisting in identifying a range of uterine abnormalities.
These may include structural problems such as fibroids (non-cancerous tumors), polyps (small growths on the uterine lining), and adhesions (scar tissue that can alter the uterine shape). It can also detect conditions like endometrial hyperplasia (thickening of the uterine lining), which may affect your menstrual cycle, fertility, or even increase the risk of cancer.
A hysteroscopy is commonly recommended for women in Fredericksburg who:

Hysteroscopy is a valuable procedure for Fredericksburg residents, allowing for clear diagnosis and treatment of uterine conditions with minimal discomfort. It offers immediate results and effective treatment for issues like fibroids or polyps.
Before the procedure, your doctor will provide a thorough explanation of what to expect and answer any questions you may have. A speculum may be used in some cases to better visualize the cervix, but most of the time, it's not needed due to the small size of the hysteroscope. This thin, lighted tube is gently inserted through the cervix into the uterus for a clear view.
The procedure is usually quick, lasting only a few minutes. While some women may feel mild cramping similar to menstrual pain, we make every effort to keep you as comfortable as possible. Nitrous oxide or pre-procedure anti-inflammatory medications are available to manage discomfort. Most patients can resume their normal activities right after the procedure with little to no disruption.

Most people experience very little discomfort during an office hysteroscopy. A mild cramping, similar to menstrual cramps, may occur but is generally minimal. We take every step to ensure your comfort throughout the procedure. For those with concerns about pain or previous experiences with discomfort, anesthesia options, such as inhaled nitric oxide, are available, though many patients do not require them. On a pain scale, most patients report a 3-4 out of 10.
You will be comfortably positioned on the exam table with your feet in stirrups. The hysteroscope is gently inserted through the vagina, and saline is used to expand the area, allowing the doctor to see the cervix and enter the uterus. The procedure is typically quick, lasting only a few minutes.
Recovery is typically immediate, and most patients are able to return to their normal activities the same day without significant disruption.
While a hysteroscopy is not designed specifically to detect cancer, it can reveal abnormal growths or tissue that may require further testing, such as a biopsy, to rule out cancer.
It’s recommended to avoid scheduling the procedure during your menstrual cycle. The optimal time for the procedure is typically the week following your period. Additional instructions will be provided during your consultation before the procedure.
