Balloon Sinuplasty™ (BSP)

technology by Acclarent, Inc.

BSP is used to relieve the pain and pressure associated with chronic sinusitis. It uses a small, flexible, balloon catheter to open up blocked sinus passageways to relieve pressure and pain in patients suffering from chronic sinusitis symptoms.

What is Chronic Sinusitis?

Sinusitis is one of the most common chronic health problems in the U.S., afflicting 37 million Americans each year. Patients suffer headaches, congestion, fatigue and other symptoms. This condition significantly impacts an individual’s physical, functional, and emotional quality of life.

Specifically, sinusitis is an inflammation of the sinus lining, often caused by infections and/or blockage of the natural sinus openings, altering normal mucus drainage. When you have frequent sinusitis, or the infection lasts three months or more, it could be chronic sinusitis.

How Balloon Sinuplasty™ Works

BSP uses a small, flexible, balloon catheter to open up blocked sinus passageways and facilitate drainage of the mucus that builds up in patients suffering from chronic sinusitis symptoms. When the sinus balloon is inflated, it restructures and widens the walls of the sinus passageway while maintaining the integrity of the sinus lining.

BSP_step1

  • Step 1: A balloon catheter is inserted into the inflamed sinus.

BSP_step3

  • Step 3: Saline is sprayed into the inflamed sinus to flush out the pus and mucus.

BSP_step2

  • Step 2: The balloon is inflated to expand the sinus opening.

BSP_step4

  • Step 4: The system is removed, leaving the sinuses open.

Unlike traditional sinus surgery, Balloon Sinuplasty™ requires no cutting and no removal of bone and tissue.
