Biography

Asefa Jejaw Mekonnen is a pulmonary, critical care and sleep medicine physician who earned his Medical degree from Addis Ababa University in Ethiopia. He did his internal medicine training at the University of Illinois in Chicago and went on to complete his Pulmonary and Critical Care fellowship at Northwestern University. He then went on to complete a Sleep Medicine fellowship at Stanford. He has served as Chief of Pulmonary Medicine at Suburban/John Hopkins medicine. He is currently director of Premier Sleep Center, a partner with Rockville Internal Medicine Group and a Principal Investigator with Velocity Clinical Research. Dr. Mekonnen also holds a certificate in Clinical Research from Harvard Medical School. He is an advocate for clinical trial diversity and inclusion. Dr. Mekonnen has written about and appeared on multiple media outlets to discuss issues related to minorities’ health. Dr. Mekonnen is an Assistant Professor at Georgetown University and a mentor for students from underserved backgrounds in his practice. He is a recipient of many awards in research and humanities and is passionate about health equality.
