PRP Therapy at Rockville Internal Medicine Group

Rockville Internal Medicine Group offers Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) therapy, a non-surgical treatment for joint pain and arthritis. It uses your body’s own healing abilities to help reduce pain and improve movement.

What is PRP?

PRP is made from a small sample of your blood. It contains platelets, which release natural healing substances that help repair injured tissues. Since it comes from your own body, there’s no risk of rejection or infection.

What are the benefits?

Many people feel less pain and notice better joint function after PRP. It may help you avoid long-term medication or surgery.

What happens during treatment?

  • The doctor will check the joint, clean the area, and apply numbing medicine.
  • Using ultrasound for guidance, the PRP is injected into the joint.
  • You'll rest for 15–20 minutes afterward and get instructions to take home.
  • Some people need 1–2 follow-up treatments over 6–16 weeks.

What should I expect after?

You may feel soreness or stiffness for a few days. This is part of the healing process. Ice, rest, and light activity are usually recommended. You may also be given simple exercises or physical therapy.

What should I do at home?

Try to rest the area for 48 hours—avoid anything more than basic walking or driving. Don’t do any intense activity for about 2 weeks.

Can I take pain medicine?

Avoid anti-inflammatory drugs like Advil, Motrin, Aleve, or high-dose aspirin for 48 hours—they can interfere with healing. Tylenol is okay. If you take daily low-dose aspirin (81 mg), pause it for 48 hours unless your doctor says otherwise. All medications will be reviewed with you before and after treatment.
