In-Office Procedures

Hysteroscopy

Hysteroscopy is a procedure where a small camera is inserted into your uterus through your cervix in order to visualize the lining of the uterus.  It is often done as part of an evaluation of abnormal bleeding and can involve removing portions of the lining of the uterus to be sent off for pathology analysis.  There are no incisions and a local anesthesia provider/team will keep you comfortable through the entire procedure.

Endometrial Ablation

Endometrial ablation is often performed in combination with hysteroscopy and is a way to control menstrual bleeding.  After visualizing the inside of the uterus with the hysteroscopy portion of the procedure, a different instrument is inserted which burns the lining of the uterus.  80% of patients who undergo this procedure have significant improvement in the flow of their menstrual bleeding.  This is also performed under conscious sedation by a local anesthesia provider/team.

Endometrial Biopsy

A simple procedure in which a small tube or catheter is inserted into the uterus through the cervix in order to retrieve some tissue which can be sent to the pathologist for evaluation.  It is often performed to check for signs of uterine cancer when evaluating for heavy menstrual or post-menopausal bleeding. While the procedure is very brief (less than 10 min) our team makes sure you are comfortable throughout the procedure often utilizing guided visualization, music, and/or a local numbing gel to help with pain.

Colposcopy

Colposcopy is a procedure performed after having an abnormal screening for cervical cancer (Pap smear, HPV testing or both).  It utilizes a large microscope which can visualize the cervix to allow for targeted biopsies of areas that look concerning for cancer or pre-cancer (dysplasia).  Guided visualization and/or music, as well as pre-medicating with Ibuprofen, can all be utilized for pain control.

LEEP

Loop Electrosurgical Excision Procedure is a treatment used to treat severe dysplasia (pre-cancer) of the cervix.  If a colposcopy is performed and the biopsy results show significant dysplasia this can be a treatment utilized to surgically remove the concerning areas of the cervix.  This procedure can be performed under local anesthesia, but most patients now opt for a local anesthesia provider/team to control pain during the procedure.

Intrauterine Device Insertion, Removal, and/or Replacement

An IUD is a T-shaped device that is inserted into the uterus to prevent pregnancy.  Depending on the device chosen, this form of birth control lasts up to 10 years  During that time it doesn’t interfere with ovulation and, if desired, pregnancy can occur within a month or two of removal.  This is a great form of birth control for patients on the go who don’t want to worry about having to take daily medication.  Some of these devices can also be used to treat abnormal uterine bleeding.  Lidocaine numbing gel, guided meditation, pre-medication with Ibuprofen and/or music can be utilized to help control pain during these brief procedures.

Nexplanon Implant Insertion, Removal, and/or Replacement

A Nexplanon implant is a hormonal (progesterone only) birth control device that is inserted into the arm and lasts for three years to control bleeding and/or prevent pregnancy.  It is a simple procedure done under local anesthesia (lidocaine numbing gel and injection) with most patients feeling just a little pinch or sting when the medication is injected.

Skin Lesion Removal/Biopsy

Have a concerning mole?  A new patch of scaly skin?  Moles and skin lesions can be signs of cancer or pre-cancer.  Our providers are happy to take that mole off or biopsy a concerning area to help diagnose these cancers at a stage that is early and more treatable.  Local anesthesia (lidocaine numbing gel or injection) will be used to control pain with most patients feeling just a little pinch or sting when the medication is injected.
