Your Health is Our Priority

Gynecology surgery may be necessary for your treatment and continued health. Whether you need treatment for conditions like endometriosis, cysts, fibroids, cancer, chronic pain, pelvic inflammatory disease, or abnormal bleeding, our physicians are experienced and compassionate surgeons. Kessler Women’s Healthcare offers many office procedures, obstetrics, and gynecology care and is here for you if surgery becomes a necessary part of your wellbeing.

Our Surgery Services (Performed at Methodist Dallas Medical Center)

Our surgeons are trained in Pelvic or Urogenital Tract Surgery.  This type of surgery involves the organs involved in reproduction and can be performed to diagnose (just look/see) or to surgically treat many conditions in this area of the body including the following procedures:

  • Removal of tubes (salpingectomy)
  • Removal of ovaries (oophorectomy)
  • Removal of ovarian cysts (ovarian cystectomy)
  • Partial removal of labia (vulvectomy)
  • Removal of uterus (hysterectomy)
  • Removal or ablation of endometriosis lesions
  • Treatment of incontinence or pelvic prolapse (in conjunction with urology colleagues)
  • Removal of fibroids (myomectomy)
  • Infertility Investigation (checking to be sure tubes are not blocked, evaluation for endometriosis)

Most of these procedure can be done in what’s called a Minimally Invasive Surgery (MIS).  98% of the procedures performed by Kessler physicians in the last 10 years have been accomplished through a minimally invasive surgery.  This means our patients quickly get back to their normal routine!  The most common types of these minimally invasive surgeries are:

DaVinci® Robotic Surgical System

Robotic surgery is an advanced form of laparoscopic surgery that allows the surgeon to treat more complex procedures than can be treated with traditional laparoscopy (see below).  Don’t worry!  The surgeon is still in control, but after connecting laparoscopic instruments to the robotic apparatus, the surgeon operates through a robotic console.  This type of surgery has greatly expanded our ability to perform Gyn surgeries in a minimally invasive way instead of requiring a large incision on the abdomen.  The majority of Kessler surgeries are performed utilizing the DaVinci Robotic System.

Laparoscopy

This form of MIS utilizes a small camera and small instruments inserted through small incisions in the abdomen.  Our physicians typically prefer to utilize the robotic system, but there are certain simple procedures for which they may still offer laparoscopy as an alternative.

Vaginal Surgery

Some procedures can be performed completely through incisions in the vagina.  If this is an option for you, your Kessler surgeon will discuss it with you.

Operative Hysteroscopy

If you are not a candidate for in-office hysteroscopy (see In Office Procedures) this same procedure can be performed at the hospital.  It is a procedure where a small camera is inserted into your uterus through your cervix in order to visualize the lining of the uterus.  It is often done as part of an evaluation of abnormal bleeding and can involve removing portions of the lining of the uterus to be sent off for pathology analysis.  When performed at the hospital it can also involve removing uterine fibroids or polyps from the lining of the uterus.  There are no incisions with this procedure.

Oophorectomy & Ovarian Surgery

This procedure involves surgically removing one or both of your ovaries. This can help with endometriosis or benign cysts. It is also used as preventative surgery in patients with a history of ovarian cancer.

Cystoscopy

This surgery inserts a small camera into the bladder to diagnose any bladder issues at the time of other gynecologic surgery.

Non-minimally invasive Surgery involves a large incision on the abdomen (called an “open” procedure or laparotomy).  Often this is similar to a C/S scar across the lower abdomen, but can also follow the brown line in the middle of your abdomen below your belly button.  Your previous surgeries and incision types, as well as the reason for your surgery will help determine which incision type is best for you.  This type of procedure is performed typically if you have complications that require further investigation or surgery at the time of one of the above MIS procedures or if your diagnosis requires it (very large fibroids, cancer).  Our surgeons only perform 2% of their surgeries in this way and have a very low rate of having to proceed with this larger incision after planning a minimally invasive one.  We work closely with a Gyn/Oncologist who is specially trained in complex pelvic surgery.  Diagnoses requiring a large incision are usually referred to him for surgical treatment.
