The Difference Between Immediate Care & Urgent Care (and Why It Matters for Your Wallet)

You wake up with a sore throat that’s getting worse. Your child spikes a fever on a Saturday. You twist an ankle walking the dog. It’s not really an emergency, but you need care today, so what do you do?

Most people default to “urgent care,” but the surprise is that not all same-day care is priced or delivered the same. The choice you make can affect your out-of-pocket cost, your follow-up plan, and the quality and continuity of your care. At PMA Health, our Immediate Care is designed to give you primary-care level medicine on your schedule without urgent care-style pricing surprises.

Defining Immediate Care vs. Urgent Care

Urgent care centers are typically designed for quick access, often operating on a model that handles the immediate issue and then sends you on your way. They can be helpful, but the experience varies widely, depending on who owns the clinic, how it bills, and whether your visit connects back to your long-term care.

&Immediate Care by PMA Health provides same-day medical care for adults and children seven days a week through walk-in and virtual options. Our providers’ training and expertise are focused on internal medicine, sports medicine, and pediatric urgent care medicine, and we coordinate with your primary care physician or help connect you with one in our practice. Reasons to seek immediate care include:

  • Coughs, colds, and sore throats
  • Earaches
  • Minor burns
  • Muscle pulls
  • Fever or flu-like symptoms
  • Rash or other skin irritations
  • Sprains and strains
  • Urinary tract infections

The Difference in Billing

Two visits for the same problem can look similar clinically, but very different on a bill. Some urgent care locations, especially those connected to hospital systems or billed as outpatient facilities, may carry higher facility-related charges than a primary care setting. Patients may see a visit charge for the provider/clinician plus a separate “facility fee” for the space/equipment/support staff in some settings. Out-of-network surprises and additional charges for tests, imaging, or procedures can also drive up your cost at an urgent care.

Primary care settings typically have lower overhead and lower facility-related costs than hospital-based care. PMA Immediate Care is intentionally designed to be a lower-cost alternative to the ER for non-emergency needs without compromising quality.

Continuity of Care

Same-day care is great, but follow-up care is where outcomes improve and matters just as much. At many urgent care visits, you get treated, get a printout, are told to follow up with your primary care doctor, and no one is tracking what happens next. You may see a different clinician each time you visit, and records may not follow you smoothly. Things can slip through the cracks, especially if you have chronic conditions, ongoing symptoms, or medication considerations.

For existing PMA patients, our Immediate Care team has access to your electronic medical record, so they can quickly and easily review key medical history details such as medications, allergies, and prior issues. They are then able to coordinate follow-up care with your PMA primary care provider or help connect you with a provider in our practice if you don’t have one. Your visit is not a one-off transaction and can become part of your long-term care plan.

Quality of Care: Quick Doesn’t Have to Mean Less Thorough

Not all walk-in care is the same level of medicine. Providers at PMA Immediate Care do not follow a “patch and send” method. Instead, we use primary-care level decision-making, focused on treating the problem in front of you and making sure you’re set up for what comes next. Immediate Care services at PMA Health include:

  • Same-day sick visits
  • Pediatric urgent care
  • COVID-19 testing
  • Electrocardiogram (EKG)
  • IV fluids (At the discretion of the provider)
  • Lab services
  • Point of care testing
  • Splints for sprains
  • Laceration repair
  • X-rays (Monday - Friday from 9 am - 5 pm; not available after 5 pm and on the weekends)

When Immediate Care Beats the ER

If you’re dealing with a minor illness or injury, the ER can be a long wait, a high bill, and more intense than what you need. Immediate care is often a better fit for non-life-threatening issues as it is faster, more affordable, and still medically thorough.

That being said, if you have symptoms that may be life-threatening, like chest pain, severe shortness of breath, signs of stroke, uncontrolled bleeding, or major trauma, go to the ER or call 911.
