Medicinal Cannabis Certifications

Medical cannabis certification is the process of being evaluated by a licensed healthcare provider to determine if you qualify for the use of medical cannabis under Maryland law. If approved, your provider will register you with the Maryland Medical Cannabis Commission (MMCC), enabling you to purchase medical cannabis from licensed dispensaries.

To qualify, patients must have a qualifying medical condition, such as:

  • Chronic pain
  • Severe nausea
  • Cachexia or wasting syndrome
  • Seizures or epilepsy
  • Persistent muscle spasms (e.g., from MS)
  • PTSD or other severe mental health conditions
  • Glaucoma
  • Any condition that is severe and for which other treatments have failed

Our provider, Brenda Mathews-Vitello, CRNP, will review your medical history and symptoms to determine if you meet the eligibility criteria.

Yes—as of July 1, 2023, recreational cannabis is legal for adults aged 21 and over in Maryland. However, obtaining a medical cannabis certification still provides important benefits, including:

  • Access to higher-potency products that may not be available to recreational users.
  • Lower taxes on medical cannabis purchases (medical users are exempt from the 9% sales tax).
  • Priority service at dispensaries.
  • Larger purchase and possession limits.
  • Better product guidance and continuity of care from your medical provider.

A medical cannabis certification ensures your use is part of your overall care plan and allows for a more personalized, medically guided experience.
